What do you think of a lawyer who tells an opposing pro se party that it is okay to ignore a deadline?

Pascha asked:
If the lawyer says that a time deadline imposed by a judge in an order is flexible. what would you think?
Would you think that the lawyer and perhaps the court would be bending the written Rules of Court on other matters, so that the pro se person would have no way of knowing what the real operational rules were? How often do lawyers stray from adhering to proceedural rules, and are they usually allowed to do so if the are proceeding against a pro se party?
